Animal allergies are triggered when exposed to the skin or saliva from the animal. Since dander is a very small particle, it can remain airborne for extended amounts of time and can be easily circulated in the right conditions. This means that direct contact with the animal, as well as being near the bedding, furniture and clothing that an animal has been in close quarters with can trigger an allergic reaction. Also, to answer a common myth; all animals have skin and saliva, therefore while there can be certain breeds that shed less or have lower amounts of saliva, there really aren’t any “hypo-allergenic” animals. Keep these facts in mind when considering adding a new addition to the family, along with where the pet sleeps, and who will be in charge of brushing or bathing.
